Shinran and Abe Kiyoko … To ask deeply must save the world —from my column of the next vol.30 Shukado catalog

Shinran and Abe Kiyoko

This catalog features two artists we are
promoting as the 30th memorial issue. Especially, Abe Kiyoko holds
her solo viewing at our gallery at the same time as this catalog’s issue.

The title of the exhibition is “Reisei Dojo
(literally, Spiritual Training Hall)”.

When I heard this title, I thought like “That’s
it!”. Yes, the life is truly a training hall.

Currently, Tokyo National Museum has held
the special exhibition, Honen and Shinran. Shinran was a monk and entered
Mt.Hiei so as to find an answer to a question growing in his mind since his
childhood. However, not only he could not attain spiritual enlightenment, but
also he was disappointed at the vulgarity, which spread even in the sacred
land, so he descended the mountain to search the answer in the common people’s
world.

I suppose Shinran was an inquisitive person
much more than any others. He could have been thinking of the meaning of the
life, the reason of people’s pain, what people really want, and the way to save
people.

It might be a risky, selfish, and stupid
thing to become a monk, beggar, or artist. Yet, it should be also true that who
saved common people’s mind was those inquisitive people or people who question
deeply.

If you consider your life is the training
place of your spirit, you could accept or enjoy any troubles.

Actually, I am being involved in a trouble,
which puts me in front of some giant enemy. Although they have adopted “Benefit”
and “Moral” as their slogan, in reality they seem to push his rivals away in
contrast to their motto. My job sometimes puts me in the situation where I need
to face a giant unreasonable hypocrisy.

But, today, our lives could not be taken
away so easily just because of such a reason. Anything could be acceptable if
you think it is the training.

By the way, I read this morning a newspaper
article on one of the terrorists from Aum Shinrikyo was sentenced to death. The
reason why they turned to be a mass of fierce hypocrites could be deeply
related to the decrease in Japanese people’s mental power struggling to ask on
what the life is.

A wonderful art or life might be able to
save someone or the world, even though it might take some hundred million
years. It’s my belief and wish.
